🌈 Pride Has Always Been a Protest — and a Celebration

As we step into Pride Month 2025, it's essential to reflect on the journey that has brought us here. From the courageous stand at Stonewall to the vibrant expressions of identity in today's parades, Pride has always been a blend of resistance and celebration.

🏳️🌈 The Origins of Pride: Stonewall and Beyond

The modern LGBTQ+ rights movement was ignited in the early hours of June 28, 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted a police raid. This act of defiance sparked days of protests and became a catalyst for the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Figures like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera emerged as leaders, advocating for the rights of transgender and marginalized individuals within the community.

One year later, on June 28, 1970, the first Pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, commemorating the Stonewall uprising and marking the beginning of annual Pride celebrations.

🎨 The Rainbow Flag: A Symbol of Unity and Diversity

In 1978, artist and activist Gilbert Baker designed the first rainbow flag as a symbol of hope and liberation for the LGBTQ+ community. Each color in the original seven-stripe flag had a specific meaning:

  • Red: Life

  • Orange: Healing

  • Yellow: Sunlight

  • Green: Nature

  • Turquoise: Magic/Art

  • Indigo: Serenity

  • Violet: Spirit

Due to production constraints, the flag was later simplified to six colors, which remain widely recognized today.

💃 Flow Arts: Movement as Expression and Resistance

In the face of adversity, especially during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, the LGBTQ+ community found solace and expression through flow arts. In places like San Francisco's Dolores Park, individuals gathered to spin poi, flags, and fans, transforming movement into a form of protest and healing. These gatherings were not just about art; they were acts of resilience and community building.

At The Gay Fan Club, we honor this legacy by offering LGBTQ+ hand fans that are not only functional but also serve as symbols of pride and expression.
